Rare Aesthetic Movement gas newel post lamp, circa 1880. The large Asian pottery vase is decorated with exotic bird, butterfly and flowers on a chocolate brown background. Vases like this were used by Thackera and other lighting manufacturers during this period on a wide range of wares. For another example of a very similar newel lamp, see "American Victorian" by Grow & Von Zweck, page 81. Lamp is in excellent condition and finish, but is missing its original gas valve. It comes with a choice of period etched crown-top shades. It is 31" high (a period replacement valve would add about 2") and 9" at its widest point. The base is 6" wide.
